Literature Text

A tiny bundle of clothes jumped from the bed, tumbling across the cool tile floor in a fit of giggles. His deep purple eyes spotted his next target- a large cardboard box left over from moving him into his own bedroom. He scrambled to it, long sleeves getting in the way and tripping him. He managed to make it to the other end of the large room. His tiny hands grasped the side and he tipped it over. Ikkesh dove in, searching the empty corners for adventure. Long black hair fell messily in front of his face as he began to feel around.

The beautiful voice of his mother called throughout the great halls of his father's palace. Ikkesh sat up, alert, and listened. His mother called again. He rushed down to his mother's warm, loving embrace. "Hello my beautiful little starlight. I bought you something special at the market today." Ikkesh squealed with delight.

"What, Mama?"

Her smile lit up the entire room as she handed the tiny Ikkesh a pack of crayons. He smiled and took them from her, saying a brief thank you before running back up to his room. Ikkesh sat on the ground, pulling papers from the small drawer designated for such, and began to draw. Magical worlds came to life before his eyes, each of the colors sparkling and becoming one with his imagination.

Hours drifted by, the crayons never running small, their bodies imbued with magic. In a different world, Ikkesh's fantasy was real, but here they were only papers.

So absorbed was he that every noise got passed him. The screaming outside and the laughter and footsteps that penetrated the silence around him went unnoticed. Even the opening of his bedroom door didn't disturb the young boy. "Ikkesh...."

His head shot up, staring in fear at his older brother. They were separated by a number of years, and Sijeva was cruel to him in all sorts of ways. "What did your whore of a mother buy you, Prince? Crayons? As if someone so powerful and set to rule needs such frivolous items." Sijeva scoffed and moved forward. That evil look was in his eyes. Ikkesh's entire body was wracked with frightened shudders as Sijeva stepped on the little sticks of color. Tears started to slide down his round face. His older brother just scoffed, grinning hatefully, and walked away.

Ikkesh crawled to the box that sat in the room. With a forlorn gaze, he looked to where his imagination and freedom lay broken with the crayons. Tears soaked through the cardboard as everything good around him crumbled into dust. Nothing good lasted here.

All he had left was a cardboard box and useless, broken crayons.
